This week I pulled together the major remaining pieces of the retro environment, including texturing the poster wall with mostly period-accurate Italian posters. This includes a poster for The Bicycle thieves and a new instance of Kilroy graffiti (the shopfront-window Kilroy is getting difficult to spot).

I spent much of my time building the archway and creating the lit walkway above it (as per Julee’s suggestion). Lights were integrated from Julee’s most recent version of shot one. I made no new creative choices with the lighting except for setting up the lamp to appear emissive and placing the spotlight inside of it. Julee has made a further updated version of the lighting for shot two which I will transfer into the current file unchanged. The scale and displacement on the ground has been altered and will undergo further iterations. Displacement has also been enabled for several other textures in the scene to create variation. Broken normals have been resolved on several scene objects such as the wall behind the posters.

Going forward we’re moving towards populating the space behind the arch, which may include creating an on-screen justification for the backlight. As well as breaking up the space between the foreground and background to break up the shadows. Other details may be as simple as illuminated windows and a subtle skyline shadow. Julee has broken up the black solid with a soft volume but the scene may also benefit from a dim sky environment.

As usual, I submitted several shots to the farm and cut together the edited vis with timecode and insets (except for Julee's new lighting inset!)
